Federal Loan Servicers

A federal loan servicer is an agency that helps a borrower handle billing and other services during repayment of federal education loans.

Borrowers will be assigned a loan servicer by the US Department of Education once a loan is disbursed; borrowers cannot select their loan servicer. Borrowers will be notified by their servicer identifying themselves as the servicer of their Federal Direct Loan.

The loan is still a federal education loan and all terms and conditions remain the same, the only difference is the borrower will now contact their loan servicer should they have any questions about their loan repayment or details.

Student and parent borrowers may be assigned to different loan servicers.

Borrowers can determine who their loan servicer is and find contact information for their servicer by reviewing their loan information with the National Student Loan Data System at nslds.ed.gov.

There are several federal loan servicers including:

  • CornerStone
  • ESA/EdFinancial
  • FedLoan Servicing (PHEAA)
  • Granite State – GSMR
  • Great Lakes Educational Loan Services Inc.
  • MOHELA
  • Navient
  • Nelnet
  • OSLA Servicing
  • VSAC Federal Loans

Through the loan servicer, a borrower can:

  • Update personal and contact information
  • View outstanding interest
  • Make payments
  • Arrange payment plans
  • Apply for deferments or forbearances
  • View interest information for tax purposes

A borrower should notify their lender if:

  • A name, address or phone number changes
  • The borrower graduates, drops below half-time enrollment, returns to school after graduation or transfers to another school
  • The borrower needs help making monthly loan payment(s)
  • The borrower has questions about their loan(s)
