A student must be admitted to an Iowa State University degree program and enrolled at least half-time (six hours for an undergraduate and five hours for a graduate student) in order to be eligible for federal financial aid.

Non-degree students are not eligible for scholarships offered through Admissions or the Office of Student Financial Aid.

There are federal financial aid options if you are enrolling in:

  • A required prerequisite(s) course for admission to a degree/professional program, or
  • An approved teacher certification program

Students who may be eligible for federal financial aid should:

  • Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) for the appropriate aid year to be considered for federal loans and grants. (Use FAFSA code 001869 so that we receive it.)

If one of the two categories noted above does not apply, you are not eligible for federal financial aid. You may, however, be able to borrow a private loan through a third-party loan lender. Contact our office to discuss your options.
